Lorri Neilsen Glenn is the author, most recently, of The Old Moon in Her Arms: Women I Have Known and Been (Nimbus, Spring 2024) and Following the River: Traces of Red River Women, an award-winning historical account of the lives of her Indigenous grandmothers (Wolsak and Wynn). A poet and essayist, Lorri has served on juries for local, regional and national awards for poetry and creative nonfiction. Halifax’s first Métis Poet Laureate, she is Professor Emerita at Mount Saint Vincent and currently a mentor in the MFA program in creative nonfiction at The University of King’s College. If this is your first contest submission, trust your gut. Try not to censor yourself, or to quail. If your words are bone-deep, know they are potent.

When I edit, I pare. Less is more. I write a draft, revise, let the draft sit for a few days, and when I return to it with fresh eyes, I can see what it needs.
